How to tell if a voice is AI

A man listening carefully to a phone held on speaker in his kitchen

You often cannot tell by listening, especially on a short, upsetting call. Listen for flat emotion, odd pauses and dodged questions, but rely on checking: hang up and call back on a number you know, or ask for your family safe word.

Do this now

  1. Do not try to win the argument on the call. Hang up.
  2. Call the person back on the number you have saved for them.
  3. Ask for your family safe word if you get through to someone claiming to be them.
  4. Keep any recording or voicemail. You may want to check it later or report it.

Why your ear is not enough

Cloned voices are good enough to fool people who know the speaker well, especially over a phone line and under stress. In a UK survey, only about one in ten adults said they were confident they could spot a deepfake (Ofcom, 2024). If you have a recording, a free checker such as AI Voice Detector can give a second opinion, but a result is never proof. Compare options in our AI voice detector guide.

So treat listening as a first clue, not a test you have to pass.

Things that can give a cloned voice away

  • Flat or uneven emotion. Crying that sounds the same each time, or calm words in a panicked situation.
  • Odd timing. Long pauses before answers, or answers that start too quickly.
  • Strange breathing or none at all. Real speech has small breaths and swallows.
  • Words that sound slightly wrong. Names, places or family words pronounced oddly.
  • Short answers to personal questions. Or a sudden hand-over to someone else.

Questions that expose a fake

  • "What did we have for dinner last time you visited?"
  • "What's the name of the neighbour's dog?"
  • "What's our family word?"
  • Avoid questions with answers that could be found online, like birthdays or schools.

What to do after a suspicious call

Even if the call ended well, take a few minutes to note what happened. It helps you, your family and anyone you report it to.

  1. Write down the details straight away. The time, the number shown, the name the caller used and what they asked for.
  2. Keep any recording or voice note. Do not delete it, even if it upsets you. It may be useful evidence if you report the call or speak to your bank.
  3. Take screenshots of the call log and any texts or messages that came before or after the call.
  4. Call the person the voice claimed to be, on a number you already have, so they know someone may be copying their voice.
  5. Tell the rest of the family. Scammers often try more than one relative, so a quick warning can stop the next call.

If the call copied a family member, it is a good moment to agree a private family code word if you do not have one yet. If a bank came up on the call, read whether phone banking voice checks can be fooled. Our full set of protection guides covers the rest.

Common questions

Do cloned voices sound robotic?

Not usually. Many sound natural, especially on a phone line. Do not wait for a robotic sound before you act.

Can a cloned voice answer questions in real time?

Some can, with a person typing or speaking the replies. That is why checking on a known number matters more than the conversation.

Are detector apps reliable?

They can help with a recording but they are not proof. A result should never be the reason you send money.

What if it sounded exactly like them?

That is what cloning is for. The voice is not proof. Call them back on their own number.
